History, architecture, museums, food, shopping, nature, music… Berlin has just about everything you could want in a city! This in itself can be a problem, as it can be hard to know what to include and what to exclude, particularly if you’re on a tight schedule. So think about a few things. What are you interested in? What would you be devastated not to see? From there you can narrow it down a bit.
If the cultural aspects of the city are your secret passion, Berlin dates right back to the 1300s, and the history is etched into the city’s walls. There are museums, universities, theatres and parliament buildings that could take you weeks to explore. For the foodies, you could eat and drink yourself to oblivion and still have only scratched the gourmet surface of the city.
You cannot, of course, forget Oktoberfest, which is an entire holiday of its own, and a wonderful way to experience total cultural immersion. Even sports fans will be spoiled for choice, with numerous sporting events held throughout the year in the city. If you don’t want to label yourself as niche tourist, you can definitely attempt to sample a little bit of everything.
Most importantly, don’t forget that no matter how desperately you want to see everything, down time is also very important. Nobody wants to be the grumpy, tired tourist who has a thousand photos but not many happy memories.
A perfect way to make use of this down time without feeling like you’re wasting your holiday is to walk through the many beautiful parks and gardens the city has to offer, or take a relaxed bicycle ride through the quieter streets.
