Visiting Botswana

With its vast roadless wilderness and open savannas teeming with wildlife, Botswana is the Africa of most adventure traveller's dreams.

Here you can glide in a mokoro (dugout canoe) through the watery mazes of the Okavango Delta, witness the annual migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebra at the Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan National Park, drive or cruise by boat past herds of elephants in Chobe National Park, go on safari to the Maremi Game Reserve, one of Africa's most pristine and exclusive wildernesses, and head out into the Kalahari Desert, home to the San and Khoe Bushmen, on a 4WD expedition to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Must-See Places

  • Capital city of Gaborone
  • Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan National Park
  • Chobe National Park
  • Maremi Game Reserve
  • The Kalahari Desert
  • A 4WD expedition to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Game viewing is usually at its best during the dry season - in winter (May to August) - and in the hot springtime months of September and October, when the animals are concentrating near rivers, pools and waterholes. The chances of spotting lions are best just after sunrise than at other times.

Africa's fastest growing city, Botswana's capital, Gaborone, is a vibrant and colourful city, which lies in the flat valley between the Kgale and Oodi hills, on the Notwane River in the south-eastern corner of Botswana.
